How the score works

A raw count of correct intervals. By chance alone you would get about one in three. No hearing level or dB result.

Worked example

With 6 trials, guessing alone would get about 2 right (one in three). If you pick the right interval 5 times, your result is 5 / 6, shown alongside the chance level so you can read it fairly.

Entry, Regular and Hard

Entry
6 three-interval trials at a few frequencies and channels, untimed.
Regular
20 three-interval trials across more frequencies and both ears, at the same comfortable level you set.
Hard
20 trials with quieter tones at closely spaced pitches, each 6 to 18 dB below Entry. Sound is never made louder to make an item harder.

Each level has its own fixed set of items and its own score, so results are only compared within the same level. How levels are designed

Questions

Is this a hearing test?

No. Your headphones, volume and room noise change what you hear, and no hearing level or dB value is calculated. See a hearing professional for an assessment.

How loud should I set it?

Set a comfortable level before you start and stop at once if any sound is uncomfortable. The challenge never raises the volume for harder items.

Do I need headphones?

Headphones in a quiet room give the most consistent results, and some items play in one ear only.
